My name is Karl Sainz Martinez, and I am the Deputy Engineering Manager at AVIRE. My academic background is in computer science and electronics engineering. I completed a hybrid MEng programme at the University of Reading, where I later went on to earn a PhD in Cybernetics. During my doctoral studies, I worked on a variety of electronics projects, both within academia and as a freelancer. After completing my PhD, I moved directly into full-time industry roles. Much of my professional experience has been in wearable electronics — initially as a hands-on engineer and later as a manager of a multidisciplinary engineering team.
I joined the AVIRE team in March 2025, drawn by the opportunity to apply my experience in team building, process optimisation, and engineering leadership. One of the aspects I enjoyed most in previous roles was shaping the ways teams operate and helping them succeed. At AVIRE, I found the ideal environment to support a talented team in reaching their goals efficiently and effectively.
What excites me most about my role is the chance to design, implement, and continually refine processes that enable people to work better — not only in the UK, but across our global teams. Since joining, I have been working on SmartCommand, with a particular focus on its new power management system.
