Code Requirements
Meeting code requirements isn’t optional – it’s essential.
National and regional codes exist to ensure the safety, accessibility, and reliability of critical communication systems during emergencies. Whether it’s enabling life-saving communication in an elevator cab, ensuring public safety in a stairwell, or replacing legacy phone lines with compliant cellular gateways, adherence to code protects both people and property. At AVIRE, we design every solution with code compliance at the forefront. Our products are engineered and tested to meet or exceed applicable regulations. We actively track code updates and make product enhancements to ensure you stay compliant.

Current Code Versions
NFPA 72-2022
The 2022 edition continues to refine and clarify requirements for emergency communication systems, including elevator and area-of-refuge two-way systems, distributed recipient mass notification, and survivability of cabling and system power.
Key updates include:
- Clarified requirements for two-way communication systems in areas of refuge and elevator lobbies.
- Added guidance on video integration for emergency communication systems.
- Updated survivability requirements for cabling pathways and power supplies in fire-rated environments.
- Enhanced testing protocols for mass notification and distributed recipient alerts.
- Streamlined terminology and section structure for better alignment with NFPA 101 and IBC.
Version Adoption Note:
NFPA 72-2022 is the current published standard. While a 2025 edition is anticipated, it has not yet been finalized or adopted. Many jurisdictions still enforce earlier versions like 2019, 2016, or even 2013. Always check with your local AHJ to determine which version is applicable to your building.
Additional Information
NFPA 72 is often enforced by fire marshals and local AHJs, especially in buildings with areas of refuge, stairwells, and elevators. The code ensures that emergency communication systems remain operational during a fire or power outage and that they are accessible to all occupants, including those with disabilities. Systems must include visual and audible indicators, hands-free operation, backup power, and direct communication with rescue personnel. NFPA 72 is frequently referenced in project specifications and adopted into state and local building codes alongside NFPA 101, IBC, and ADA.
