Code Requirements

Meeting code requirements isn’t optional – it’s essential.

National and regional codes exist to ensure the safety, accessibility, and reliability of critical communication systems during emergencies. Whether it’s enabling life-saving communication in an elevator cab, ensuring public safety in a stairwell, or replacing legacy phone lines with compliant cellular gateways, adherence to code protects both people and property. At AVIRE, we design every solution with code compliance at the forefront. Our products are engineered and tested to meet or exceed applicable regulations. We actively track code updates and make product enhancements to ensure you stay compliant.

Code Requirements

Elevator and emergency communication systems incorporate multiple components that must comply with UL standards for safety, performance, and reliability. These standards govern devices such as elevator telephones, base stations, rescue assistance call boxes, attendant monitoring systems, illuminated signage, and 2-hour fire-rated cables. Compliance ensures products meet national safety codes (e.g., NFPA 70, NFPA 72, NFPA 101) and are acceptable to Authorities Having Jurisdiction (AHJs).

Who It Affects

  • Elevator manufacturers and installers
  • Building owners and facility managers
  • Fire alarm and life safety system contractors
  • AHJs (inspectors, code officials)
  • Emergency communication system designers and integrators

Current Code Versions

  • UL 60950-1: Information Technology Equipment, 2nd Edition (note: superseded by UL 62368-1 in many markets but still referenced in elevator communications equipment)
  • UL 924: Emergency Lighting and Power Equipment, 11th Edition (latest revisions 2020)
  • UL 2017: General-Purpose Signaling Devices and Systems, current active edition
  • UL 444 / UL 1424: Fire-rated cable listings and performance standards, referenced in communications cable certifications

Key Updates Include

  • UL 60950-1: In transition to UL 62368-1, but still applicable to elevator phones and base stations; addresses electrical and fire safety.
  • UL 924: Expanded coverage for illuminated exit signs and refuge area signage; updated illumination and power backup requirements.
  • UL 2017: Covers elevator phones and other monitored devices to ensure emergency calls reach an attendant or monitoring station.
  • UL Fire-Rated Cable Standards (UL 444 / UL 1424): Ensure that 2-hour fire-rated cables maintain circuit integrity during fire conditions and meet NEC survivability requirements.

Additional Information

  • UL listings and compliance are frequently mandated by building codes (e.g., IBC, NFPA 72, NFPA 101).
  • Products not UL Listed may face rejection by AHJs.
  • AVIRE/Rath Products:
    • Elevator telephones and base stations reference UL 60950-1 and UL 2017.
    • Illuminated signage (e.g., refuge area signs, landing signage) is UL 924 Listed.
    • Two-hour fire-rated cables are UL Listed under CMP/FPLP/CL3P types and UL Subjects 444/1424.
  • Failure to comply may result in denied occupancy permits, failed inspections, and liability exposure in emergencies.
